The Aowin Municipal Assembly has launched a project to construct 27 mechanised boreholes aimed at providing safe and reliable drinking water to communities hit by the ongoing water shortage in the municipality.
The initiative comes after reports highlighted severe water scarcity in parts of Aowin, largely attributed to illegal mining activities that have polluted rivers and streams—the primary water sources for many communities.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Stephen Morcher announced that the Assembly is investing GH¢2 million into the project. A sod-cutting ceremony on December 11, 2025, marked the official start of construction. The boreholes will be powered by electricity where available, and solar energy in areas without electricity. Additionally, each community will receive two polytanks to store and distribute water efficiently.
The Assembly aims to ensure that every household has access to safe water for drinking and domestic use. Monilices Ghana Limited has been awarded the contract, with a projected completion timeline of two months. The company confirmed that thorough assessments were conducted to select optimal drilling locations and pledged quality execution.
The Aowin Assembly believes the project will bring lasting relief to residents and significantly improve the quality of life across the 27 beneficiary communities.
