The government has directed the families of the six women who died in the El-Wak Stadium stampede to submit the names of qualified relatives for possible recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi announced this during a visit to Eyan Maim in the Central Region, where he met one of the bereaved families to express the government’s condolences.
He said President Mahama had granted an automatic slot to each family, adding that the State would support them with burial and funeral arrangements.
Mr. Genfi noted that the President had also ordered a suspension of the ongoing recruitment exercise in Accra to allow for a review of safety measures.
“Those who lost their lives while trying to join the military will have a replacement nominated by their families. Regional authorities will engage you to select someone qualified for enrollment,” he said.
The stampede occurred when thousands of applicants rushed the stadium during the recruitment exercise. Heavy congestion at entry points sparked panic, leading to multiple injuries and fatalities.
The Ghana Armed Forces has confirmed six deaths. Twenty-eight others were admitted to the 37 Military Hospital, with five in the Intensive Care Unit and 12 in critical condition.
