The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has warned that transport fares may soon increase as fuel prices are expected to rise in the next pricing window beginning Monday, March 16.

Industry analysts predict nationwide pump price hikes, with current figures showing the indicative price of petrol rising from GH¢10.46 to GH¢11.57 per litre between March 1 and March 15. Diesel has also increased sharply from GH¢11.42 to GH¢14.35 per litre, while liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has moved from GH¢9.38 to GH¢10.67 per kilogramme.

According to the union, these increases are placing significant pressure on commercial transport operators whose operational costs continue to rise.

Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abass Imoro, said the union had previously intervened to prevent some drivers from independently raising fares despite mounting financial pressures.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, March 15, Mr Imoro explained that drivers are struggling with rising costs of fuel, spare parts, lubricants and other vehicle maintenance expenses.

He noted that while the union does not rush to review fares, any substantial increase in fuel prices would likely lead to an adjustment in transport fares.
