President John Dramani Mahama has declared July 10 and 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the recent floods, as part of efforts to reduce the risk of further flooding and promote environmental sanitation.
The exercise, organised under the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee and themed “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the floods,” will mobilise citizens to clean their communities through activities such as desilting drains, clearing debris from roads, and cleaning markets, lorry parks, recreational areas and other public spaces.
In a statement issued on July 6, the government described the initiative as a critical intervention to protect lives and the environment. President Mahama directed all government appointees, including Ministers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Chief Executive Officers and heads of public institutions, to leave their offices and personally lead clean-up exercises in their communities.
The clean-up will begin on Friday, July 10, with personnel from the security services, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies, while members of the public will join the exercise on Saturday, July 11.
The government said the campaign is both an emergency response to the recent floods and a call for long-term behavioural change, citing indiscriminate waste disposal and plastic pollution as major contributors to flooding. It also directed MMDAs to work with waste management companies to provide the necessary logistics and ensure the prompt removal of collected waste.
The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, called on all Ghanaians to participate actively in the nationwide clean-up to help safeguard communities from future disasters.
