The Deputy Director of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Alexander Twum-Barima, has expressed concern over the increasing presence of illicit drugs in Ghana’s tertiary institutions, including universities, nursing training colleges, and teacher training colleges.
According to him, findings from a nationwide survey conducted by the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment indicate that drug use and distribution are becoming more prevalent within educational institutions. He noted that recent arrests have revealed that students are not only consuming drugs but are also increasingly involved in their sale and distribution on campuses.
Mr. Twum-Barima described the trend as a worrying development that threatens student welfare and discipline within academic environments. He called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, educational authorities, and communities to address the issue effectively.
He also emphasized the need to complement enforcement measures with rehabilitation and reintegration programmes aimed at supporting young people affected by drug addiction.
