The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with a deadly attack at Worinyanga in the Tempane District that left one person dead and several others injured.
The suspects — Majeed Bawumya, 34, Milla Justice, 27, and Majeed Awudu, 20 — were arrested during a police operation on May 26, 2026, following violence linked to the planned enskinment of Sambin Halidu as chief of Tindorunga.
According to police investigations, tensions arose after kingmakers presented three candidates, including Sambin Halidu, to the Overlord of Bawku, Naba Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, for vetting and possible enskinment. An opposing faction allegedly objected to Halidu’s selection and threatened to disrupt the ceremony.
Police said the suspects and other accomplices reportedly attacked the family house of Sambin Halidu in the early hours of May 26 while preparations for the enskinment were underway. Armed assailants allegedly fired indiscriminately and set ablaze a Mitsubishi 4×4 vehicle belonging to the family.
One victim, Iddrisu Sumaila, who sustained gunshot wounds during the attack, later died at the hospital, while several others suffered injuries.
A search at the residence of suspect Majeed Bawumya, also known as Atan Majeed, led to the retrieval of a pistol, sharp objects, GH¢600 cash and three mobile phones believed to be linked to the crime.
Police say investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to arrest other suspects currently at large. The Regional Command has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
