An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced 43-year-old TikToker Camilla Alhassan to one year in prison after she pleaded guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publication of false news over videos targeting President John Mahama.
The conviction stems from a series of TikTok videos posted between late June and early July in which Alhassan falsely claimed that President Mahama performed ritual sacrifices involving 32 cows to secure victory in the 2024 general election. She also alleged, without evidence, that the government’s distribution of sanitary pads to victims of the June 29 floods was intended to conceal the purported rituals.
The court handed down the sentence on Thursday, July 16, after Alhassan admitted to all the charges. She had earlier been remanded into lawful custody while awaiting the outcome of a court-ordered pregnancy test before sentencing.
Prosecutors told the court that investigations found the claims to be entirely unsubstantiated, leading to her prosecution and subsequent conviction.
