Three major teacher unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PTTAG), have given the government a one-week ultimatum to conclude negotiations on their expired Conditions of Service or face possible industrial action.

The ultimatum follows an inconclusive meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), which informed the unions that it needed a fresh government mandate before continuing negotiations. The unions are demanding the promotion of eligible teachers and the implementation of a 20 percent Deprived Area Allowance for teachers serving in underserved communities.

Union leaders expressed disappointment over the delay, warning that the patience of their members is wearing thin. They urged the government to act swiftly, cautioning that failure to reach an agreement within the new deadline could disrupt industrial peace and affect teaching and learning across the country’s pre-tertiary education sector.
