The National Information Technology Agency (NITA) has warned that persistent power outages could increase the cost of internet and other digital services as operators spend more on backup systems to keep critical infrastructure running.

Speaking at the close of National ICT Week 2026, NITA Board Chairperson Estelle Akofio-Sowah said frequent power interruptions were placing pressure on data centres and other digital infrastructure, requiring operators to maintain multiple layers of redundancy.

She said the additional costs could ultimately affect the affordability and accessibility of digital services. NITA also disclosed that more than 8,000 fibre cuts had been recorded so far this year, with vandalism identified as one of the causes.

Meanwhile, stakeholders highlighted the growing potential of Ghana’s gaming and Esports industry. Esports Association Ghana Vice President Maximus Ametorgoh said about US$121 million was spent in Ghana in 2025 on video game downloads and subscriptions.

Stakeholders called for greater investment in reliable electricity, digital infrastructure and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, gaming and Esports to help Ghana fully harness the digital economy.
