The Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Office at the Office of the President, has announced the start of vetting for applicants under the Granting of Citizenship for the Historic Diaspora Community programme.

In a statement issued on February 10, the Ministry said applicants will be vetted in batches at the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre in Cantonments, Accra, beginning February 11, 2026. Applicants have been advised to wait for official notification of their vetting schedules before reporting to the centre to avoid overcrowding.

The Ministry noted that, due to the high number of applications and the limited time ahead of the ceremonial swearing-in scheduled for March 5, 2026, not all applicants will be processed during the current exercise. It, however, assured that the citizenship application process remains open online and that no applicant will be disadvantaged.

The announcement follows the temporary suspension of applications on February 1, which government said was aimed at reviewing and improving the process to enhance accessibility, efficiency and user experience for applicants across the global African diaspora.

Government reaffirmed its commitment to granting Ghanaian citizenship to qualified historic diasporans as part of its broader diaspora engagement agenda under initiatives such as the Year of Return and Beyond the Return.
