John Dramani Mahama has called for calm and constructive dialogue on LGBTQ+ issues, emphasizing that Ghana’s immediate priority remains addressing citizens’ basic needs rather than the ongoing debate over anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
Speaking during a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at Jubilee House on March 30, Mahama described the topic as highly sensitive and emotionally charged, even in countries with long-standing liberal traditions. He urged stakeholders to approach discussions with restraint and respect for national values.
The President highlighted pressing socio-economic challenges including access to education, healthcare, jobs, food, clothing, and shelter as the government’s main focus. He noted that debates surrounding the proposed bill in Parliament reflect diverse public opinions and must be handled through democratic processes.
Mahama stressed that any outcome should align with Ghana’s Constitution, uphold human rights, and preserve national unity. He also acknowledged international reactions to the issue, affirming Ghana’s commitment to balancing its cultural context with constitutional principles while maintaining constructive global relationships.
