Ghana’s Black Stars delivered a disciplined defensive performance to secure a 0-0 draw against England in their second Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The stalemate leaves both nations tied on four points, with England maintaining the top spot in the group and Ghana holding second place. Depending on the outcome of the subsequent Tuesday fixture between Panama and Croatia, a draw in that match would mathematically guarantee Ghana a spot in the Round of 32 ahead of their final group stage game.
Throughout the match, England commanded possession but struggled to dismantle Ghana’s compact defensive structure. The Three Lions asserted control from the kickoff, while the Black Stars utilized a deep defensive block to neutralize threats and look for counterattacking opportunities.
England’s primary first-half offense came via the right flank through Reece James and Noni Madueke. In the 12th minute, a promising combination between the duo was halted by a critical defensive intervention from Thomas Partey.
By the 37th minute, England’s dominance on the ball was reflected in 283 completed passes compared to Ghana’s 54, though clear scoring chances remained limited. Declan Rice had a notable opportunity before halftime, heading over the crossbar from a Madueke cross.
Ghana generated offensive momentum late in the first half when Antoine Semenyo overpowered Reece James to enter the penalty area, earning his side’s first corner kick. In first-half stoppage time, Harry Kane saw a close-range shot blocked by a cluster of Ghanaian defenders to keep the game scoreless at the break.
England intensified their attack in the second half. Anthony Gordon and Djed Spence linked up on the left side to find Jude Bellingham, who set up Madueke for a blocked shot. Gordon’s subsequent attempt off the rebound was securely saved by Ghanaian goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. Kane later forced a low save from Asare with a long-range strike, and Madueke fired over the crossbar following a clearance scramble.
Ghana nearly opened the scoring with just over ten minutes remaining in regulation. Mohammed Fatawu initiated a counterattack to find Prince Adu open on goal. Despite a heavy touch that allowed the English defense to close in, Adu managed a falling shot that struck teammate Semenyo before England successfully cleared the ball. The Black Stars appealed for a penalty during the play due to contact from Ezri Konsa, but the referee allowed play to continue.
England pressured for a late winner in the final minutes. In the 86th minute, Bukayo Saka forced a sharp save from Asare, and shortly after, substitute Nico O’Reilly directed a header against the crossbar. The rebound fell to Kane, who hit his volley over the target from close range.
Ghana held on through the final whistle to secure the point. The Black Stars will conclude their group stage campaign against Croatia on June 27, with their qualification status potentially determined beforehand by the outcome of the Panama-Croatia match.
