The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has warned nurses and midwives against using unlicensed recruitment agencies to secure jobs abroad, citing the risk of exploitation, abuse and unfair treatment.

The Association says the number of Ghanaian nurses and midwives seeking opportunities overseas continues to rise. It reports that more than 10,000 emigrated in 2025, while between 200 and 400 health professionals are currently leaving the country each month. About 1,000 nurses and midwives are also reported to have left Ghana between January and August 2026.

GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo says the migration is placing additional pressure on Ghana’s health system, increasing workloads and contributing to burnout among health professionals who remain in the country.

The Association is also calling for greater transparency over bilateral agreements between Ghana and countries recruiting health professionals, saying such agreements should be made publicly accessible.

GRNMA has advised nurses and midwives to verify recruitment agencies before engaging their services. It says members can seek assistance from the Association to confirm whether an agency is legitimate.

The Association also says more than 80,000 nurses and midwives are currently awaiting posting and is appealing to the Ministry of Finance to release financial clearance for their deployment.

According to the GRNMA, reducing the posting backlog and improving working conditions could help ease pressure on the health system and reduce the loss of skilled health professionals to other countries.
