Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has called for a younger generation of leaders to take over the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after President John Dramani Mahama’s final term in office.
Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Mr Kpebu said he would prefer Finance Minister Ato Forson to emerge as the party’s future flagbearer, with Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as his running mate. He argued that the time had come for younger leaders to assume responsibility within the party and bring fresh ideas to governance.
Mr Kpebu noted that the party’s senior members have already had their opportunity to lead, adding that youth leadership would help renew the NDC ahead of the 2028 general elections.
President Mahama, who returned to office a year ago, is serving his final term and is expected to retire from active politics in 2028. With the NDC yet to officially present a flagbearer for the next election, Mr Kpebu said either the finance minister or the Foreign Affairs Minister would be well placed to lead the party going forward.
