Motorists and commuters using the Tema Motorway Interchange have raised concerns following the appearance of cracks on sections of the recently asphalted surface, particularly along the stretch towards Afienya-Akosombo.

A prominent diagonal crack has become visible on part of the interchange, sparking questions about the durability and long-term condition of the road, especially as traffic volumes continue to rise along the busy corridor linking Tema, Accra and other parts of the country.

Some road users say the development is troubling, given the strategic importance of the interchange as a key transport hub on the N1 Highway. A commercial driver who spoke to Graphic Online expressed hope that authorities would quickly assess the situation and address the defect before it deteriorates further.

Commuters have called on the relevant agencies to investigate the cause of the cracks and undertake prompt remedial action to prevent additional damage and ensure road safety.

The first phase of the interchange, which replaced the former roundabout, was opened to traffic on May 16, 2020. The second phase, featuring a steel girder bridge connecting Tema to the Akosombo stretch, was commissioned in December 2024.

Road users stress that ongoing monitoring and routine maintenance are essential to safeguard the infrastructure, maintain smooth traffic flow and protect the substantial investment made in the project.
