The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has seized more than 2.3 tonnes of suspected cannabis during a major anti-drug operation at Gbi-Wegbe, near Hohoe in the Volta Region.

The operation, carried out in the early hours of Sunday, May 31, 2026, resulted in the confiscation of 2,372.38 kilograms of the suspected narcotic substance, with an estimated street value of GH¢1.18 million.

According to NACOC, the seizure followed an intelligence-led operation targeting suspected drug trafficking activities within the area. Investigations had identified a farmhouse and warehouse facility at Gbi-Wegbe that was allegedly being used as a storage and distribution hub for large quantities of illicit drugs.

Acting on the intelligence, officers raided the premises and uncovered the suspected cannabis, which was subsequently seized.

The Commission described the operation as a major success in its ongoing efforts to combat the cultivation, storage, trafficking, and distribution of illegal narcotics across the country.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case and identify those responsible. While no arrests have been announced so far, NACOC says efforts are underway to locate and apprehend all individuals connected to the drug haul.

The Commission noted that the seizure forms part of a broader nationwide strategy to dismantle drug trafficking networks and prevent illegal substances from reaching communities, particularly vulnerable youth.

NACOC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and security through intelligence gathering, enforcement actions, and collaboration with communities and other law enforcement agencies.

The latest operation ranks among the Commission’s most significant drug interceptions this year, underscoring its continued crackdown on narcotics-related crimes across Ghana.
