The Government of Ghana has received the 11th batch of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa following xenophobic attacks in the country.
The 87 returnees arrived at the Accra International Airport on Monday, August 17, 2026, where they were welcomed by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other government institutions.
Ambassador Harold Agyeman, Coordinating Director for Political and Economic Affairs at the Ministry, assured the returnees of government’s continued support for their reintegration and encouraged them to use the skills and experiences gained abroad to rebuild their lives in Ghana.
He also stressed the importance of African unity, peaceful coexistence and solidarity despite the challenges faced by Ghanaians in South Africa.
A representative of the evacuees expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria and other stakeholders for facilitating their safe return and providing support.
Officials from the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, NADMO, Ghana Red Cross and Port Health were also at the airport to assist the returnees.
The latest arrival brings to about 1,600 the number of Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa since May 2026. Government expects about 300 more evacuees to return in the coming weeks as the second phase of the evacuation programme concludes.
