A stampede occurred at the Accra Central Market on Monday, December 22, as heavy Christmas shopping led to severe congestion within the Central Business District.

Traders told Adom News that the incident was triggered by overwhelming human traffic as shoppers rushed to purchase food items and other essentials ahead of the festive season. The congestion reportedly caused panic in parts of the market, resulting in several people collapsing, including a pregnant woman.

During the chaos, some shoppers were said to have lost their mobile phones and money. The situation was later brought under control after personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service intervened by spraying water to disperse the crowd and restore calm.

Accra Central Market is one of the busiest commercial centres in the capital and typically records a surge in patronage during the Christmas period as thousands of shoppers prepare for the festivities.
