More than 300 members of the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union have demonstrated at the Bank of Ghana (BoG), demanding the release of over GH¢350 million in funds they say have remained locked up since 2019.

The workers, under the umbrella of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), presented a petition to the central bank on behalf of about 19,000 mineworkers and their families affected by the situation.

General Secretary of the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union, Abdul-Moomin Gbana, accused the Bank of Ghana of failing to adequately protect workers’ funds and called for the immediate recovery and payment of the monies.

TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah also urged the Bank of Ghana and government to intervene, stressing that the affected workers had waited long enough to regain access to their funds.

Receiving the petition, the Head of Legal at the Bank of Ghana assured the demonstrators that their concerns would be studied and addressed. He reaffirmed the central bank’s commitment to maintaining financial stability.

The Mineworkers’ Union is demanding a swift resolution to the matter and the full release of the funds owed to affected workers and their families.
