The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has announced plans to revive and operationalise the Komenda Sugar Factory by the end of 2026.

The Ministry confirmed that land has been secured for the cultivation of sugarcane to provide raw materials for the factory. Established in 1964, the Komenda Sugar Factory has faced longstanding challenges, including technical difficulties that led to its shutdown, leaving the facility dormant for several years.

In early August, the Ministry inaugurated an Interim Management Committee to assess the factory’s assets, examine its financial and business viability, and evaluate the sugarcane supply chain.

Speaking during a working visit by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, said preparations were progressing steadily to ensure the factory becomes operational by the end of 2026.

She also called on investors to support sugarcane farmers with financing and other essential inputs to sustain production. According to the minister, farmers in the Komenda area are ready to supply sugarcane, expressing confidence that local expertise and renewed investment will help restore the factory to full operation.
