The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called on the government to immediately reverse the latest increases in electricity and water tariffs, warning that it will use every parliamentary mechanism available to oppose the decision.

Addressing the press on Monday, December 8, Ranking Member on the Energy Committee, George Kwame Aboagye, described the tariff hikes, approximately 9% for electricity and over 15% for water as an undue burden on already struggling households and businesses. He argued that the increases effectively wipe out the recently approved 9% minimum wage adjustment for 2026.

Aboagye insisted that the Minority’s stance is “firm and non-negotiable,” accusing the government of exploiting citizens rather than providing economic relief. He stressed that Ghanaians “deserve leadership, not exploitation,” adding that the caucus will continue to hold the government accountable for what it considers punitive utility policies.

The Minority plans to deploy motions, urgent parliamentary questions, and possible special debates to demand transparency and fairness in the management of utilities regulated by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

The caucus warned that the tariff hikes could severely impact households, small businesses, and industries raising operational costs, threatening jobs, and further reducing purchasing power amid existing economic pressures.
