The Ghana Police Service has thwarted a planned robbery attack in Buipe, resulting in the arrest of two suspects and the death of two others during subsequent operations.

According to Savannah Regional Deputy Police Commander, Reynolds Manteaw, the incident began on April 26, 2026, when a police patrol team encountered three armed men along the Yapei–Tamale road. The suspects reportedly opened fire on an armoured police vehicle, prompting officers to return fire before the attackers fled into nearby bushes, leaving behind a locally manufactured firearm and an empty cartridge.
Intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of two suspects, Osman Abdulai, also known as “Landan,” and Umar Seidu, in Tamale the following day. During interrogation, the suspects admitted to planning a robbery at Yapei and confessed to attacking the patrol team, while also identifying their accomplices.
Further police action on April 29 led officers to a guest house in Buipe, where the remaining suspects were tracked down. During an attempt to arrest them, one suspect allegedly attacked officers with a machete and was shot. Both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and were later pronounced dead at the Buipe District Hospital.
The bodies have since been deposited at St. Ann’s Hospital in Damongo for preservation and autopsy as investigations continue.
