The Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has revealed that security officers were involved in seven of the 15 deaths recorded during violent incidents linked to Ghana’s 2020 and 2024 general elections.
Presenting the government’s assessment of electoral disturbances in Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Mubarak said investigations showed that the fatalities occurred during police and military operations to restore calm at polling stations and collation centers across the country.
He said three of the incidents, which resulted in four deaths, were linked to the use of firearms by armed police patrol teams, while military personnel were responsible for three other incidents leading to three deaths.
The minister explained that the findings formed part of a comprehensive report compiled by a Special Investigation Task Force set up to review all election-related fatalities from the two elections.
According to him, the task force examined police case files, conducted forensic and ballistic tests, and undertook site visits to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Mr Mubarak added that although some of the incidents were caused by clashes between political party supporters, the role of some security personnel in several cases could not be denied and would be addressed in accordance with the law.
