Commercial transport operators have warned that fares on the Kasoa–Winneba route will increase by 20% from June 29 if government fails to begin repairs on the deteriorating road.

The operators, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, say the poor condition of the road continues to cause frequent vehicle damage, increased fuel consumption, and prolonged travel delays.

They noted that a two-week ultimatum issued to government during a demonstration on June 12 has expired without any visible progress on repair works. According to the groups, the proposed fare adjustment is intended to offset rising maintenance and operational costs resulting from the road’s condition.

The unions have called on government and the Ministry of Roads and Highways to urgently intervene and commence repairs to prevent the planned fare hike. They also appealed to commuters for understanding, describing the move as necessary to protect drivers’ livelihoods and vehicles.
