One person has sustained serious injuries in a four-vehicle crash on the Ofankor–Pokuase stretch of the Accra–Kumasi Highway, days after a separate accident on the corridor claimed 12 lives.
The latest crash, which occurred on Wednesday morning, involved a VIP bus, a military vehicle, a Toyota Vitz and a four-wheel-drive vehicle. No fatalities were recorded, but the injured person was rushed to hospital for treatment.
The incident has caused heavy congestion on the Kumasi-bound lanes, resulting in significant delays for motorists.
Ga North Municipal Chief Executive Akwetey Agbo blamed recurring crashes on driver indiscipline and called for the installation of speed cameras along the corridor, particularly around the John Teye descent towards Pokuase.
He also urged motorists to slow down and obey traffic regulations, stressing that continuous public education and stricter enforcement of speed limits were needed to improve road safety.
The latest crash has renewed concerns over the safety of the Ofankor–Pokuase corridor, which has recorded several serious accidents over the years. In November 2016, a truck reportedly suffered brake failure while descending from John Teye, crashing into seven vehicles and killing two people.
Concerns have also been raised about poor street lighting and traffic diversions linked to ongoing road works in the area.
The latest incident is expected to heighten calls for stronger enforcement, speed monitoring and improved safety measures along the busy highway corridor.
