Parliament has approved a concession agreement for the construction of a new Accra–Kumasi Expressway, clearing the way for a major road infrastructure project aimed at improving travel between Ghana’s two largest cities.

The agreement designates the Ministry of Roads and Highways as the Contracting Authority, with Accra–Kumasi Expressway Limited serving as the concessionaire. The approval comes amid widespread public concern over the deteriorating condition of the existing Accra–Kumasi highway, which has been affected by potholes, poor road surfaces, and inadequate lighting.

Presenting the agreement to the House, Minister for Roads and Highways Governs Agbodza assured lawmakers that the expressway would not replace the current highway but would operate as a high-standard alternative route. He explained that under international transport protocols, tolls may be charged on expressways to recover construction costs, provided a free alternative route remains available.

The project will involve the construction of a new six-lane dual carriageway designed to improve safety, reduce travel time, and enhance transport efficiency along the corridor. The minister described the expressway as a critical investment, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Accra–Kumasi route to national transportation and economic activity.
